Cursor Review: The AI code editor developers are switching to
Cursor feels like the future of coding assistants, and also like a product still being built. We tested agent mode, codebase indexing, and whether it survives a real week of work.
Cursor is the first AI code editor that changed how we work rather than just how fast we type. After a month of production use across two real codebases, we would describe it as a junior developer with perfect memory of your repository sitting next to you.
The signature capability is codebase awareness. Ask "where do we validate subscription status?" and it finds the right files across the repo and proposes a change consistent with your patterns. Agent mode goes further: give it a task like "add rate limiting to the API following our existing middleware pattern," and it plans, edits multiple files, and runs terminal commands while showing you each step. We let it handle well-scoped tasks end to end and reviewed the diffs — the review loop is the correct way to use it.
Tab completion, which sounds like table stakes, is noticeably better than the competition; it predicts multi-line edits based on your recent changes, and the acceptance rate in our logs beat Copilot by a wide margin.
The costs and caveats: the Pro plan is around $20 a month, but heavy agent use consumes usage quota faster than you expect, and we hit limits twice in a heavy week. The product also changes monthly — features appear, move, and rename — which is exciting and occasionally destabilizing. And like every AI editor, it writes plausible wrong code confidently; your review is the safety system.
For professional developers, this is currently the most productive way to work with AI.
The verdict
Buy it if you code daily and want AI that understands your whole project, not just the open file. Skip it if you are a casual programmer — Copilot's cheaper plan covers autocomplete needs.
What works
- Agentic workflow
- Codebase awareness
- Fast inline edits
What to watch
- Pricing
- Rapid changes
Ready to try Cursor?
Cursor is what happens when you build the editor around the AI instead of bolting the AI onto an editor. It indexes your whole codebase, so its answers actually know what your project does. The agent mode can knock out a refactor while you watch, which is equal parts impressive and unsettling.
